Mutants

What are mutants?

Do you think they're like this?:

In the world of fantasy, yes. If these are what mutants are in your perspective, then the heck with it, even I want to be a mutant if being one would mean you'd have super powers and extraordinary abilities.

Unfortunately, we are in the real world. We can't  have lasers blasting through our eyes (without getting our eyes burned) like Cyclops, mind reading capabilities like Professor X and Jean Grey, or the ability to control weather like Storm. These kinds of mutants don't even exist. IN THE REAL WORLD, mutants are individuals, organisms, or new genetic characters arising or resulting from mutation. They are organisms that have characteristics resulting from chromosomal alteration, and it ain't pretty to look at.

The article I'll base my blog on is from http://widbox.com/weird-human-mutations. The people you'll see are people who have been affected by mutations, thus, altering their physical appearances.
------------------------

The Elephant Man:

He is called as such because of of the tumor that covers his face. It started small, but due to lack of treatment and medication the tumor grew -- resulting to this.
------------------------

Mermaid Syndrome:

This is what a mermaid in fantasy books and stories look like. They appear pretty, elegant, magnificent creatures but not when their features are applied on people, just like the baby you see below.

The baby you see possesses a mermaid-like tail due to birth abnormalities. This affects the development of her bladder and kidneys.
-------------------------

Tree man:
Take a look at the texture of these materials:

and compare them to these people's skin texture:

They somehow look alike. His extremities are gradually transforming into tree branches. It's believed that he was born with the HPV virus.
------------------------

Frog Boy:
Consider this frog and compare it to the new born baby that looks like one.

This poor baby looks like a frog, does it not? It is said that he was born with a genetic mutation which made him look like a frog. He has those big beady eyes and his head is glued to his body -- just like a frog.
------------------------

These are real to life mutations and they're no joke. Movies, stories, books, and media have given us an altered vision of mutants.

R.I.P. Ironhide

So yeah, My family and I watched Transformers 3: Dark Of The Moon yesterday.

Overall the movie was freakin' awesoooome! \m/

I only hated one part though -- the part where my boyfriend, Ironhide, had to die! It srsly broke my heart. When I saw him die before my very eyes (on the screen), I teared up. I loved him since Transformers 1. He was the machine with the most weapons, and he was the boldest of the Autobots.

I mean...

Why'd you have to die, Ironhide? T.T He died without a chance to fight back. He was completely caught off guard. I am so </3. *sighs*

But hey, movie's over and I can't do anything about the death of my true love. :-I

I LOVE YOU, IRONHIDE! R.I.P.

Utopia: Solutions To Social Problems

The picture you see on top is a Cycle on Poverty. Basically, it just repeats itself. (duh, that's why it's called a cycle. haha)

Anyway, our class was asked to focus on one problem you see on the cycle then site a possible solution that could solve the problem and make it "a world of utopia".

I'll be focusing on the PROBLEM ON MALNUTRITION.

Yes. Malnutrition. According to http://www.thefreedictionary.com/malnutrition, Malnutrition is defined as poor nutrition because of an insufficient or poorly balanced diet or faulty digestion or utilization of foods. My definition of malnutrition is when an individual doesn't receive the right amount of food needed on a daily basis. The people you see on top have bad cases of malnutrition. They only get to eat once a day or maybe not at all. Malnutrition is not pleasing to the eye, especially when you see it beforehand. It makes me feel sorry for them, and I pity them a lot. How come they ended up like this? It just doesn't seem fair.

This is where utopia comes in. Utopia is an ideally perfect place, especially in its social, political, and moral aspects. This is where your ideas of perfect come in -- whatever they are.
They may be clean surroundings, same sex marriage or free cupcakes everyday for the rest of your life. Whatever is perfect for you is utopia.

The assignment was to think of a way on how to solve this problem, given that I could do anything I could think of for a solution as long as it's possible. I could think of lots of ways to solve malnutrition.

1.) Prayer.
You can never go wrong with God. All you need is faith but then faith without works is dead, so we still have to do efforts.
2.) Have regular feeding programs.
I'd give 'em the best, scrumptious, delicious, mouthwatering food there is to help restore their resistance, body built, and love for food. I'd also open jobs with justifiable wages for parents and people who are 18 and above so they can work for food and their other necessities, that way they won't have to rely on my provided feeding programs all the time.
3.) Give them vitamins.
I'd give them the sufficient vitamins needed to ensure their health.
4.) Provide a certain amount of money.
I'd give them a certain amount of money for them to start their own business, thus, earning more for their family's needs.

These are only some of the solutions I could think of to solve this problem. If malnutrition was done with, then the world would be almost perfect.

Developments On Robotics

Robotics is a branch of science that deals with the design, construction, operation, and application of robots. In this field of science, a lot of scientists, mathematicians, and technicians agree that robotics is a fascinating field but all the more does it need development. There have been a lot of companies who try to develop on this field nowadays and of course, there are blogs and articles which feature them. One of which is the blogsite, RoboticsNedir.

RoboticsNedir: http://roboticsnedir.com/
This website concentrates on different blogs about robotics. It features achievements, developments, and the latest news on robotic technology. This weblog also mentions the movie I, Robot. They compare their humanoid technology to the ones seen in the said movie. In I, Robot, they named their robots VIKI and Herbie while in RoboDynamics, they call it Luna.

"Engineers in the field of robotics seem to invest a lot of effort into creating humanoid robots"
In my opinion, they do seem to create a lot of robots which function and look like humans. In effect, these robots tend to take place of humans, maybe as a secretary, a receptionist, a security guard, and who knows maybe a movie director someday. Nobody can really tell in our time. Here are some pictures of Humanoid Robots:

From: http://goo.gl/nQra9
Some robots aren't just for "replacing" humans. Other robots are programmed for the contribution to the environment. An example would be ZEN Robotics' machine that helps in recycling thus helping the environment. "Harri Valpola (CEO of Zen Robotics) explained that the system was now able to manage the traditional waste management systems, such as drums or mechanically resistant."

Another example would be the article on "Kuka Robotics Develops Industrial Robot To Ensure Human Safety". (URL: http://goo.gl/VW4qL) According to this article that it is possible for a robot and a human to work together to carry a load with the help of intelligent assist devices (IAD). The only concern is the safety of the human the robot is working with. These machines have to be remodeled to make sure that they are safe to work with. Kuka Robotics developed a robot that has been guaranteed to be safe for humans. They say that this robot is  built with actuators and joint torque sensors, so that the robot has collision sensing and absorbing capacities. This robot’s power is such that it will not cause injury to a human even while performing the clamping operation.
These are only some of my reactions to the recent developments and advancements on the field of robotics. Some are beneficial implications because they show that the advancement of robotics has good effects and is a big help to humans (e.g. they save time and effort for them). But also, these are also deleterious implications because if the advancement of the robotic technology continues, humans may have that tendency to start getting lazy and to rely their work on the robots. So there are beneficial and negative effects to these developments and advancements.

Thoreau Excerpt (Repent Harlequin)

Reading " 'Repent Harlequin!' said the Ticktock Man" was quite fascinating. There was this quote in the beginning of the story by Henry David Thoreau stating that:

"The mass of men serve the state thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies. They are the standing army, and the militia, jailers, constables, posse comitatus, etc. In most cases there is no free exercise whatever of the judgment or of the moral sense; but they put themselves on a level with wood and earth and stones; and wooden men can perhaps be manufactured that will serve the purpose as well. Such command no more respect than men of straw or a lump of dirt. They have the same sort of worth only as horses and dogs. Yet such as these even are commonly esteemed good citizens. Others—as most legislators, politicians, lawyers, ministers, and office-holders—serve the state chiefly with their heads; and, as they rarely make any moral distinctions, they are as likely to serve the devil, without intending it, as God. A very few—as heroes, patriots, martyrs, reformers in the great sense, and men—serve the state with their consciences also, and so necessarily resist it for the most part; and are commonly treated as enemies by it."

According to this quote. I understand that there are different types of people classified into three.

1.) The mass of men who serve "with their bodies"
2.) The men who serve with their consciences
3.) The men who serve with intellect

The mass of men who serve "with their bodies"

       "
The mass of men serve the state thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies. They are the standing army, and the militia, jailers, constables, posse comitatus, etc." In my opinion, these are the people who are able to do work with their physical bodies. In the story, I'd compare this to Pretty Alice. According to http://echeat.net/essay.php?t=27574 "The men who served with their bodies was populace, represented by Pretty Alice, who wanted to belong, wanted to conform."

The men who serve with their consciences

       "I
n most cases there is no free exercise whatever of the judgment or of the moral sense; but they put themselves on a level with wood and earth and stones; and wooden men can perhaps be manufactured that will serve the purpose as well. Such command no more respect than men of straw or a lump of dirt. They have the same sort of worth only as horses and dogs." These are the people who I think can be compared to the Harlequin. The Harlequin had his own way of thinking. Despite the existence of the Ticktock Man and him being aware of the dangers that might be bestowed upon him, he still kept rebelling because he had his own ways. He stood firm on what he thought was "right" in a sense.
The men who serve with intellect

"Others—as most legislators, politicians, lawyers, ministers, and office-holders—serve the state chiefly with their heads;" These are the people who I think are intelligent enough to figure things out and to stand out. Just like the Ticktock Man, these people are the ones who order other people around. The Ticktock Man was superior in a way that everybody feared him because of what he/it can do.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Is this kind of people evident in the Philippine society?

Yes. An example would be former President Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralin Marcos. He was the 10th president of the Philippines. He declared Martial Law in his term. To make things basic, he was REALLY REALLY strict with his rules. His rules MUST be implied and followed. In 1983, Benigno Aquino Jr. was assassinated and it was believed to be the doing of Marcos because Aquino wanted to run against him for president. But during Marcos' reign, the Philippines was in the greatest shape you'd ever imagine. The economy was progressing, people were disciplined, the environment was cleaner than it is now. It was almost too perfect. The only thing Marcos wanted was to make the Philippines a better place.
Just like the Ticktock Man, he disciplines people to be ALWAYS on time -- trying to make them be on the dot, not missing appointments. Discipline is always for the better. He'd make sure that time is used wisely and that every second of your life is fruitful.
